Select the Minus Front selection (displayed below in green). Again, we will be using the Pathfinder tool - to be specific, the 'Minus Front' action.

If this doesn't work, try with each letter individually. This will cause the object in front to make a hole in the background shape. Under the top row of icons, click the second one in from the left: Minus Front. Now select both of the shapes with the Selection Tool.
Try to ungroup the letters, select all and try again. Then select Object/Arrange/Bring to Front. After you created outlines to that font, the letters are then put in a group and minus front doesn't work well with groups.
